In this moment, Virginia Community Voice encourages organizations to reevaluate how they engage marginalized communities.

The pandemic has demonstrated what happens when we do not commit ourselves wholeheartedly to the work of racial equity. People of color are more likely to negatively impacted by the virus and the economic recession because they are more likely to be essential workers, utilize public transportation, have underlying conditions, and go without health care. This is not a coincidence; it is by design.

As Virginia reopens, people in decision making roles (who are mostly White and affluent), are making decisions about how (people of color and low-income) will work, travel, learn, and access health care and other services.

We believe it is not only right, but will lead to better outcomes, if those who are most affected are included in decision making about the future. By listening to and engaging marginalized voices we believe organizations will find a way out of this crisis more quickly and effectively.

Virginia Community Voice offers leaders a simple framework for how to equitably make decisions, and engage people of color and other marginalized groups. Using this model, organizations can maximize impact and minimize harm caused to people in historically marginalized communities.

In this two-hour virtual training, participants will:
  • Learn about the four stages of the Community Voice model of engagement: Listen, Connect, Craft, and Reflect
  • Reflect on their own experiences making decisions about and engaging people in historically marginalized communities
  • Consider the difference between intent vs. impact in our volunteerism, research, investments, or programming
  • Learn strategies for maximizing impact and minimizing harm in decision-making and engagement
